Neon Tide came from the same cut of Boulder Opal as another ring I made, and I really liked how different the two stones turned out.
This one has a longer, narrower shape with a deep blue base, but when the light catches it, incredibly bright green flashes appear almost out of nowhere. That’s where the name came from—the green has a neon quality to it that seems to move through the stone as you turn your hand.
I kept the design simple and used a textured .925 sterling silver band. With an opal this bright, I didn’t think it needed much else. The texture gives the silver some character and keeps the ring from feeling too polished or formal, while the clean bezel lets the opal do what it does best.
That’s one of the things I enjoy about working with Boulder Opal. Even two stones cut from the same material can develop completely different personalities. You don’t really know what you’re going to end up with until they’re finished and you see them moving in the light.
I also like making pieces that don’t feel like something you wear for a season and put away. This is a simple, solid design that can be worn for years, pick up a few marks and memories along the way, and someday be handed down to someone else.
